While the NHS is very good at providing a large number of procedures for a population, there are many advantages to choosing to have your care privately, either self-funding or using health insurance packages.

- As a surgeon, when I am a patient myself, the only thing that I am interested in is who is carrying out the procedure. Everything else follows from that.
- In the private setting, you always have the opportunity to meet your surgeon in advance; this is crucial to establish trust.
YOU AVOID TRAINEE SURGEONS AND STUDENTS
- Trainee surgeons have to learn somewhere, but, despite best efforts, complication rates are higher. Having surgery on the NHS in an independent sector treatment centre or high street chain does not protect you from trainee, non-consultant grade surgeons.
YOU HAVE A CHOICE AS TO THE TYPE OF LENS IMPLANT USED IN YOUR PROCEDURE
- You don’t need to have the same lens implant as everyone else.
- Wouldn’t you like to see without spectacles, which many private lens implants allow?
YOU DON’T HAVE TO WAIT
- Surgery within the NHS environment – be it hospitals or high street treatment centres – are subject to NHS rationing criteria. This means that you need to wait until your vision has declined to a certain point before NHS funding is available for your care.
- There aren’t many medical conditions best-treated late and cataracts are not on the list. Don’t delay your care.
